As we commemorate the tragic events of 2012 when 34 miners were shot dead near the koppie in Marikana,
the stark picture below should remind us how easily a toxic mix of highly emotive issues, reckless leadership and poor decision-making can explode and leave tens of people dead.
Will we ever learn from it? Most probably not. The 1922 rand revolt where more than 200 mine workers were killed was first, then Marikana in 2012 where 34 mine workers were killed. What will explode next?
Let’s try and learn from these events, especially when the dark clouds, similar to the ones on the picture below, are once again building up around highly emotive issues.
