The South African Guild of Actors (SAGA) - a branch of UASA, the Union - which is affiliated to the Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) will make a far-reaching submission to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry on the Performers Protection Amendment Bill on Thursday.
SAGA believes that the current Performers Protection Act which was promulgated before the internet age and the advent of television in South Africa denies actors basic statutory and contractual rights to earn a fair residual income based on the continuous exploitation of their audio-visual performances. The Guild sees the Amendment Bill as a golden opportunity for meaningful economictransformation in an industry dominated by corporate monopolies by granting actors statutory protections and the right to earn decent residual incomes and to protect their personal reputations all the time.
