Everyone deserves a decent health system
The trade union UASA fully supports the initiatives of Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, as announced this week. The building of six much-needed new academic hospitals and medical schools is an exciting prospect and a step forward in a country where proper healthcare for all and well-trained healthcare professionals are in short supply.
However, caution and vigilance are necessary to avoid the pitfalls of possible corruption, the unwise spending of funds and unnecessary escalations in cost.
UASA will keep an eye on the promised refurbishing/upgrading/replacement of existing infrastructure, which are included in the cost of approximately R10 billion, and the appointment of suitably qualified personnel to manage the new multi-billion-rand institutions.
UASA’s members and all other South Africans deserve a decent, functional and above-average health system.
