Why did it take so long to take action?
UASA welcomes the sacking of Cabinet ministers Sicelo Shiceka (co-operative governance) and Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde (public works), and the suspension of Police ChiefBheki Cele – all implicated in corruption.
While UASA appreciates internal processes, it takes far too long to conclude investigations into suspected wrong-doing on ministerial and senior government levels ensuing in South Africans losing faith in the decision making capacity of South African government leaders.
The case of Bheki Cele is a case in point – UASA believes it will take months, if not years, to fully investigate and take disciplinary action against Cele after two dodgy police lease deals worth R1,7 billion came to light.
It is time for government to take immediate action when corruption or other wrong-doing is implicated. The South African tax payer deserves no less.
