UASA Celebrates Mandela Day

Mandela day is celebrated all over the world as a day of taking action to inspire change in our communities.

It is a day where we are reminded and encouraged to help those that cannot help themselves through various activities, big or small that can make a positive impact in someone’s life or a community as a whole.

At UASA we saw an opportunity to do something within our community to make it cleaner and safer. We offered to provide gardening services at our local police station in Florida. Once every week, Bootie, one of our UASA’s employees goes to the police station to cut the grass, trim the bushes and make the gardens look welcoming and presentable.

This is part of our social responsibility as an organization that operates in Florida, we have to give back to the community and assist wherever we can.

Nelson Mandela said ‘It is in your hands, to make a better world for all who live in it’. We have heeded the call to assist were we can and hopefully other organizations that operate in Florida will come up with different ways in which they can also help uplift the community.

This year the Nelson Mandela Foundation launched a new Mandela Day strategy called The Next Chapter. This is to mark the tenth anniversary since Mandela Day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009. They want to encourage governments, civil society, citizens and corporates to focus on five areas they can offer services. The five areas are: education and literacy, food and nutrition, shelter, sanitation and active citizenship.

Mandela day is a global call that celebrates the idea that each individual has the ability to change the world. Nelson Mandela fought for social justice for 67 years, we are encouraged to start with only 67 minutes of our time, to do our part through volunteering and community service to honor his legacy.

Happy birthday Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
