Urgent solution needed for the Eskom scourge

Eskom’s return to load shedding today forecasts nothing good for the South African economy and by extension our unemployment situation.

UASA therefore urges pres. Cyril Ramaphosa to announce his plans for Eskom without delay.

Eskom cites capacity shortage as the reason for stage 2 load shedding from 9 am until 11 pm today, and specifically a broken conveyor belt at the Medupi power station. The company said it was conducting maintenance work on its infrastructure but was now battling to bring some units back online.

The return of load shedding – if this lasts longer than today – will put a knife in the back of any progress we have made in terms of stimulating the economy.

Employers may have to implement short hours for workers, which means reduced income for a section of our already cash-strapped consumers.

An urgent solution must be found for the Eskom scourge. The country cannot continue any longer under threat of forced unproductivity and loss of income for employers as well as workers. The people are losing patience.
