Slight fuel price adjustment welcome, but paraffin price increase a blow to the poor who need heating

The slight increase in the petrol price together with a slight drop in the price of diesel comes as a relief to workers and other South African consumers after the hefty increases over the past few months.

The additional 5 cent to the price of paraffin will, however, be a blow to the poor who need heating in the cold winter months.

With a protest march planned against high fuel prices this week, demands for an immediate R1 cut to taxes added to fuel prices, and since it is the poor who suffer most as a result of the increases, it is time government looked at how local fuel prices are calculated, and whether some the local additions’ income could be sourced from elsewhere.

The country’s poor need a hand-up, they need more assistance from government to increase their cash flow and to keep their heads above water.
