UASA signs multi-year wage deal with Sibanye-Stillwater

The trade union UASA, Solidarity and NUM signed a multi-year wage agreement with THE MINERALS COUNCIL SOUTH AFRICA, who acted on behalf of SIBANYE GOLD LTD T/A SIBANYE-STILLWATER.

The wage negotiation process was tough amidst a lack luster world economy and the concomitant fluctuating commodity prices. The parties eventually succeeded in finding common ground on  CPI linked adjustments for category 4 to 8 workers as well as artisans over the next three years.

While the agreement constitutes a review of conditions of employment of individual employees, covering many aspects of conditions of employment, the agreement covers two very interesting aspects which represents a major victory for the employees at Sibanye.

Medical aid contributions  by the employer has been increased from 50% to 60% and this allowance became a condition of employment in respect of Category 4 – 8 employees.

Secondly, the parties also agreed to include MINIMUM SEVERANCE PAY which, in the event of retrenchments, the Company agrees to pay severance pay of 2 (two) weeks’ basic pay for each completed year of continuous service, along with guaranteed minimum severance pay which has been increased from R 30 000 to R 50 000. The latter will be increased incrementally over 3 (three) years.
