IndustriALL General Secretary Mr Valter Sanches together with Ms Paule France Ndessomin, IndustriALL Regional Secretary for Sub-Saharan Africa, visited UASA’s head office in Florida, Roodepoort, South Africa, on 16 April 2019 to officially welcome UASA to IndustriALL.
With today’s technological developments in travel and communication almost everyone is affected by something that happens in parts of the world they have most likely never been to. The world has become a village indeed. This change is also evident in the workplace, with numerous companies going international and employees being exposed to international standards and workplace practice.
This is phenomenon is known as globalisation.
UASA, a continually thinking and forward-looking organisation, recognised an opportunity for growth and decided to align itself with and become an affiliate of IndustriALL Global Union.
IndustriALL Global Union was founded in 2012 and represents more than 50 million workers in 140 countries. It challenges and negotiates with multinational companies on a global level to achieve better working conditions and trade union rights all over the world.
Through its affiliation with IndustriALL, UASA will now be part of a group of trade unions not only in Sub- Saharan Africa but around the world, that share knowledge and training opportunities like recently in Lesotho with IDUL.
This brotherhood of unions means bigger, stronger unions can assist smaller ones and help them grow to become bigger and stronger unions, too.
As part of organised labour we stand for workers’ rights and can do so better in collaboration with other unions that share the same ideology. We are all in the same business, why not do it together?
Together we are stronger.
Part of the process moving forward is to find ways in which we can bring about sustainable jobs, how to tackle and minimise possible job losses due to the 4th industrial revolution and dealing with issues faced by women in the workplace.
